High school activities list for college applications

Why the Common App Activities List Matters in College Admissions

The Common App Activities List is one of the most important—and often most confusing—parts of the college application. As a college advisor in Bluffton, SC, I help high school students clearly and confidently pull together their Common App Activities List so colleges can see who they are beyond grades and test scores. This section allows students to showcase up to ten meaningful activities, including jobs, sports, leadership roles, volunteer work, family responsibilities, and personal projects, highlighting commitment, impact, and time spent.

One of my core services is helping students organize, prioritize, and write their Activities List in a way that tells a strong story. We focus on placing the most meaningful activities first, thoughtfully selecting which activities to include, and ending the list on a memorable note. Whether a student is deeply involved in a few commitments or juggling many interests, I guide them step by step so their activities reflect their strengths, passions, and future goals, which is an essential part of a successful college application.

Building a stand-out college resume starts early. In 9th grade students should start by exploring a few school activities to find what clicks. By 10th grade, students should narrow their focus to one or two meaningful commitments, such as a summer job or consistent volunteer work that aligns with their interests. This strategic buildup allows students to step into more significant leadership roles during 11th and 12th grade, ensuring their activity list reflects a dedicated, well-rounded commitment rather than a scattered list of interests.

Below are some resources to help with your activities list.
